Catalina Island is a small land mass of the coast of California near Los Angeles and started off as a simple area of native culture. During the 19th century the majority of the natives were wiped out from disease spread by exploring Europeans. The island would sit vacant for long periods of time. The area was popular with Russian otter hunters as a place to hunt and make camp. Most would not stay long as the island lacked a viable fresh water supply.
Monks attempted to build a mission on the island but failed because of the fresh water problem. Their attempt was the last by outside sources until an American named Wrigley came in and decided to restore the island to its scenic wonder.
Millions of dollars were spent in setting up the conservatory on Catalina. An airport was constructed as well as the road system. Cars are restricted on the island and most of the full time residents prefer to use the golf carts as a main mode of transportation.
Water Sports
Surfing is popular but the area is restricted against such activity all year barring a one month period during the spring when two of the back island beaches are opened for the activity.
Fly fishing is very popular and the island actually holds the most famous school for the sport. The wonderful fly fishing around the island draws thousands to its borders each year.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are massive. There are known to be at least seventeen shipwrecks at different points around the island.
Cultural Diversity
There is no native culture left on the island as it was wiped out. The largest part of the population is from the United States. Full time residents are severely restricted on what they can and cannot do because of the protected status of the island.
Activities
Hiking is one of the most popular activities on the island. One can get a year long hiking pass for free and spend weeks exploring the island on foot.
Bicycling is popular as well and one can get a year long bicycling pass for sixty dollars.
