The Marshall islands are a grouping of tiny land masses and are part of the area known as Micronesia in the South Pacific. The island area was settled originally by the people from Micronesia but soon came under the rule of Spain who enslaved many of the islanders for crews on the many sailing ships that were running gold from one side of the world to another in a vain attempt to hide the wealth from the many revenge filled attackers. This last only a short period of time as the Germans found use for the islands and turned the area into a trading post for their country.
The Japanese invaded in WWI and took control and then in WWII the US invaded and defeated the Japanese. Some years later the Marshall Islands signed the Compact of Free Association with the US and became an independent land. To this day they are self governed but less then self sufficient to say the least. The US provides more then sixty million dollars worth of aid to the Marshall islands every year and continues to try to bring the area out of economic ruins with little success.
Water Sports
The economic ruins of the Marshall Islands are not conducive to tourism. There is a small group of people that do travel to the islands each year and the US is hoping to garner and grow this with more incentives. With that in mind there is very little in the way of organized water sports to be found other than some fishing and swimming on the beach.
Surfing has never taken hold because of the high cost of the equipment and the same is true of the wind surfing as the annual income of most of the native residents is less than one thousand dollars.
Cultural Diversity
The culture of the land has been largely untouched over the years with a wide range of people. The British maintain a huge population in respect to the small amount of industry on the island. The same is true of the Spanish and of course the US people who have moved to the island in search of more freedoms.
Activities
Most of the activities on the island take place in the resort areas. The tribes of locals perform for the guests and there are constant demonstrations of native ceremonies and such. There is a thriving tour bus business on the island as well that will take you to the most exotic locales.
