Largely populated by the native Chamorros, Northern Mariana Island was discovered by Spain in the middle 1500's. The first crew to go ashore ended up in the bloody battle as one of the natives took a small boat belonging to the crew. This would incite tensions between the groups that led to Spain's occupation and near wipe out of the entire population. It is now discovered that this was nothing more than a cultural misunderstanding but the damage was done. With the population dwindling, natives from other islands were brought in to repopulate the island.
Spain sold the area to Germany and it was then overthrown by the Japanese during WWII who used the island as a garrison. The US would step in and win the land after a long fought and bloody three week battle. In the 1970's the island became an official US Territory and remains under this agreement to this day. As part of the deal the island is self governed but must allow all from the US who wish to enter, this has served the small area well for the economic growth.
